Office For Postdoctoral and Research Careers (OPRC)

English as a Scientific Language (ESL) Courses

The Office for Postdoctoral and Research Careers, Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, and the Biomedical Research Institute are pleased to offer English as a Scientific Language Courses for Postdoctoral Fellows.  Other researchers may apply and will be accepted as space allows.

These courses, for non-native English speakers, are intended to improve verbal and written communication skills.   By the end of the course, the participants will have improved their ability to give a clear presentation of their research and to express themselves more correctly in spoken and written English.

Four course levels will be offered, geared toward the majority of the participants, and based upon the results of placement testing.  Courses will be held onsite at BWH, twice weekly on alternating evenings (Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday), from approximately 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.  Specific room assignments will be made after placement testing.  There will be a separate Call for Applications for EACH semester. 

SPRING 2008 COURSE INFORMATION: 

COURSE PAYMENT:  $100 per student: $50 from student, $50 from PI

IMPORTANT DATES:  (subject to change)
Classes begin:  January 28, 2008
Classes end:  Group 1 - May 14th, Group 2 - May 19th, Group 3 - May 13th, Group 4 - May 8th.

OTHER ESL PROGRAMS:
Brigham and Women's Hospital's Workforce Development group also provides ESL classes on-site that focus on cross-cultural communication in the workplace, oral proficiency, reading and writing messages.  To find out about availability and schedule a 15-minute assessment, please contact Melanie Som at 617-713-3741.
