Our world-renowned researchers are constantly working on new ideas to improve neonatal care. Some areas of research in the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are lung disease, neonatal neurology, and infant development. Many of the therapies in use now were developed through past research. During your baby's stay in The Smith Family NICU, you and your baby may be eligible to participate in one or more research studies. You may be approached by a researcher for your consent to participate with your baby in a project. Taking part in a research project is always completely voluntary.
All studies taking place in the NICU have the approval of the Mass General Brigham Human Research Committee and meet the highest standards of scientific and clinical excellence.
