The Orthopaedic Research Laboratories bring together orthopaedic surgeons and basic science researchers to develop tomorrow's treatment options for patients with a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. The approach is to translate new findings from basic and clinical investigations into a platform for skeletal health and orthopaedic care. Emphasis is on chronic and acute musculoskeletal problems such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and fractures, sports injuries, bone cancers and metastases, spine diseases, and skeletal aging.
Basic science research has paved the way for significant improvements in patient care by elucidating disease mechanisms in cellular and animal models that can be translated into human disease treatments. Principal investigators and their teams are working to better understand a wide variety of problems including the molecular biology of tissue regeneration, intervertebral disc degeneration, and the critical role of osteoclast cells in regulating bone disorders including osteopetrosis and fibrous dysplasia.
The Mass General Brigham community provides a unique environment for basic scientists and clinicians to collaborate on driving musculoskeletal therapeutics forward, putting novel discovery and innovation into clinical practice.
