Office For Postdoctoral and Research Careers (OPRC)

English as a Scientific Language (ESL) Courses

The Office for Postdoctoral and Research CareersCenter for Faculty Development and Diversity, and the Biomedical Research Institute are pleased to offer English as a Scientific Language Courses for Postdoctoral Fellows.  Other researchers may apply and will be accepted as space allows.

These courses, for non-native English speakers, are intended to improve verbal and written communication skills.   By the end of the course, the participants will have improved their ability to give a clear presentation of their research and to express themselves more correctly in spoken and written English.

Four course levels will be offered, geared toward the majority of the participants, and based upon the results of placement testing.  Courses will be held onsite at BWH, once weekly, with an optional drop in discussion hour on Thursdays.  Specific room assignments will be made after placement testing.  There will be a separate Call for Applications for EACH semester.

COURSE PAYMENT:  $100 per student: $50 from student (Checks payable to BWH Biomedical Research Institute), $50 from PI (Cost center included on application).

08/08/08 - Accepted applicants notified
08/22/08 - Deadline for applicants to complete placement testing
09/05/08 - Students notified of section assignment
09/09/08 - Semester begins

* Tuesday and Wednesday evening classes include a 15 minute break.
** This session is open to students from any of the groups, who are interested in practicing their spoken English, or who would like more help from a teacher.

Brigham and Women's Hospital's Workforce Development group also provides ESL classes on-site that focus on cross-cultural communication in the workplace, oral proficiency, reading and writing messages.  To find out about availability and schedule a 15-minute assessment, please contact Irasema Ramirez to get an assessment.
