Forty-two interns per year enter the categorical track, three-quarters of whom complete three years of residency and approximately on-quarter enter subspecialty fellowship after two year as "short-trackers" (ABIM Subspecialty Investigator Pathway). There is no requirement to declare short-tracking status in advance of the NRMP match; such decisions are made jointly with the program director in the fall of intern year. Experiences in the categorical track are divided between inpatient care (general medicine, cardiology, oncology, ICU, and CCU), outpatient care, and a wide variety of clinical and other electives. In addition, interns in the categorical, primary care and medicine-pediatrics tracks can choose to enter one of the focused residency tracks.

Ambulatory Training:
Each member of the medical housestaff has a weekly outpatient session either at Brigham and Women's or at one of the several practice sites throughout the Boston area. The single largest training site is the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates (BIMA) practice. Clinic sites also include several bilingual Spanish-English community health centers, the Fish Center for Women's health and other affiliated sites. The housestaff serve as the primary care provders for their patients, working as members of ambulatory care teams along with staff internsits, nurse practitioners and secretarial staff. Residents remain with their outpatient preceptors for all 3 years to foster mentorship.
In addition, all housestaff participate in an extensive ambulatory curriculum during their outpatient medicine rotations. While ambulatory experinces differ between the categorical and primary care training programs, all ambulatory blocks include conferences focusing on outpatient topics, specialized didactic experiences, as well as continuity clinic and subspeicalty elective time.
The BWH is proud to feature two primary care training programs for residents with dedicated interest in ambulatory and general medicine, advocacy, epidemiology and health policy. Click here to learn more about Primary Care training at BWH.
