Photdynamic Therapy
Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeons have developed an active Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Program to destroy cancerous cells in patients with lung or esophageal cancer. Following the administration of a photosensitive drug retained preferentially in cancer cells, a specific laser light is delivered through a flexible bronchoscope to activate the drug and destroy the cancer cells. Physicians at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are also using Photodynamic Therapy to aggressively treat and improve the quality of life of patients with airway cancer by shrinking tumors inside the larynx, trachea and bronchi.
