The Pulmonary and Critical Care Division of Brigham and Women's Hospital has assumed a leadership role in the the area of Clinical Research. The Asthma Clinical Research center, led initially by Dr. Jeffrey Drazen and now by Dr. Elliot Israel, has been very active, including participation in the NIH-funded Asthma Clinical Research Network and Asthma SCOR, in which the investigators determined the role of short- and long-acting beta agonists and inhaled steroids in the treatment of asthma. Members of the Division and the Channing Laboratory continue to perform health policy studies and a variety of epidemiological studies on asthma. In 1996, BWH was chosen as the only center in New England for the NIH-funded National Emphysema Treatment Trial. This five-year randomized clinical trial is designed to determine the role of lung volume reduction surgery in the care of patients with emphysema. Dr. John Reilly is the Principal Investigator, and Dr. David Sugarbaker of Thoracic Surgery is co-Principal Investigator. Edward Ingenito is currently devising a newer, less invasive bronchoscopy-based procedure that could revolutionize lung volume reduction surgery. Human trials are will begin soon (?)
