Patient and Family Focused Care
Brigham and Women’s Hospital has long been committed to not only the care of our patients but also the many other needs that they and their families have. Our philosophy of patient and family focused care was a force behind the design of the new Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
With input from our patients and their family members, the Center includes many features that emphasize healing in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
- All 136 rooms, including 40 designated ICU rooms, are private, with private baths offering maximum privacy and dignity for patients.
- All rooms can be converted to serve as ICU rooms with the assignment of an ICU nurse, so a patient needn’t be moved when intensive care is required.
- Nearly every cardiovascular service is located in one building so that patients and their families will experience a more convenient and seamless continuum of integrated care.
Involving the Family
The active presence of a family member or loved one can be an essential part of a patient’s recovery. Family participation and support is encouraged by our staff.
Family focused features include:
- a “family zone” with a television that can curtained off for the patient’s privacy;
- patient rooms that are designed to take advantage of the soothing natural light;
- waiting areas, resource centers, and education and consultation rooms to ensure both comfort and privacy.
