Internship Opportunities at the Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE)
Research Internship with Dr. Jim Yong Kim
Overview: The Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE) fosters the support and coordination of training, research, and service to reduce disparities in disease burden and to improve treatment outcomes both at home and abroad. The Division focuses on infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis) as well as non-infectious diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, diabetes, addiction) and other health problems (that disproportionately affect populations in the developing world) of major importance to society.
There are also several opportunities over the course of the year to participate in events hosted by any of the four pillars of institutional support: DGHE, Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights (Harvard School of Public Health), Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (Harvard Medical School), and Partners In Health. There also may be some opportunities to explore outside interests related to the projects with which the organizations are involved. However, the priority of the intern should be their work at the DGHE.

Part-time Academic Year Internship Duration: Academic Semester: Fall (September to December) Spring (January to April)
Hours: Part-time (approximately 20-25 hrs/wk)
Remuneration: None
Responsibilities: Interns at the DGHE are based in Boston and asked to cover a broad range of tasks. The bulk of activity, however, will be to support the overall goals of the organization. Examples include:
- Financial administrative support
- Entering data into administrative and research databases
- Researching possible donors for the development team
- Assisting with event logistics
- Writing/editing faculty and division reports and reviews
- Conducting literature and internet searches
- Retrieving articles, journals, electronic resources, books
- Writing background reports or summaries
- Creating graphs and tables for reports and publications
- Editing PowerPoint presentations
Full-time Academic Year Internship

Duration: Academic Semester: Fall (September to December) Spring (January to April)
Hours: Full-time (approximately 35-40 hrs/wk)
Remuneration: Stipend available

Global Health Delivery Project Internship
The DGHE is a founding partner of the Global Health Delivery Project. GHDonline, the “communities of practice” website of GHD, is where health care implementers share proven practices, connect with colleagues, and find resources they need to improve health outcomes in resource-limited settings. GHDonline consists of a number of online communities of practice that global health professionals can join to participate in discussions and post resources, and search for practical information to help them design, implement and improve health care programs and services. Responsibilities: 1. Management and Development of Public Communities

GHDonline Tuberculosis Infection Control Community: Support Drs. Ed Nardell, Paul Jensen, Grigory Volchenkov, moderators of the community
2. Outreach and membership development
- Invite new members on behalf of moderators
- Research organizations in the field and invite to join efforts
3. Content Production
- Manage the GHDonline Content Dashboard (DB): research, collect and qualify data
- Update the Search Index on a regular basis (basic html)
- Contact organizations for ok on syndication
- Ensure consistent flow of new content on GHDonline and the GHD Blog by attending conferences, interviewing experts, and writing/editing content
- Coordinate/Initiate projects such as translations or designing a user tour of GHDonline
Reports to: Sophie Beauvais, Web Content Manager Amy House, Communities/Membership Manager
Work with: GHDonline team and GHD Project team, Founding partners. Qualifications:
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Interest/background in global health/healthcare
- Fluency in a foreign language, particularly Spanish, Russian, Chinese and/or Haitian Creole, and basic knowledge of internet technologies (html) a plus
Summer Internship

The Division focuses on infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis) as well as non-infectious diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, diabetes, addiction) and other health problems of major importance to society.
We are seeking a full-time research assistant to support Dr. Jim Yong Kim, Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Professor of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kim is also Director of the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights; he is Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a major Harvard teaching hospital; and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Prior to his return to Harvard in December 2005, he served as the director of the World Health Organization HIV/AIDS department, where he oversaw initiatives to help developing countries scale up their treatment, prevention, and care programs. This included the “3x5” initiative designed to treat three million people affected by the disease in developing countries by the end of 2005. He also served as advisor to the WHO Director-general before being appointed to the WHO HIV/AIDS department. Dr. Kim has 20 years of experience in improving health in developing countries. He is a founding trustee and former Executive Director of Partners In Health, a not-for-profit organization that supports a range of health programs in poor communities in Haiti, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi and the United States. Responsibilities: This research intern will work closely with Dr. Jim Kim to provide research support. The main responsibilities of the intern will be to organize presentations, help draft scholarly articles for publication, and compile lecture and course materials for graduate and undergraduate courses offered by Dr. Kim during the 2009-2010 academic year. Topics will focus on a range of Global Health Delivery initiatives, including HIV/AIDS, MDR-TB, health systems strengthening, etc. The intern will also be required to work closely with the administrative and communications teams to manage Dr. Kim’s schedule and ensure that materials and presentations for various obligations are prepared in advance. Qualifications:
- Minimum of a BA/BS, with strong academic credentials
- Research experience (1 year minimum) in healthcare and/or social justice; adept at utilizing online and print sources
- Strong ability to multitask in order to meet strict deadlines
- Excellent computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office and PowerPoint
- Excellent writing skills
- Attention to detail
- Works well in an office environment, both independently and as part of a team
