Mercedes Becerra, ScD, completed the doctoral degree in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Becerra's research focuses on the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis and the burden of this disease in patient households. She is leading a large prospective cohort study in Peru that aims to provide new knowledge about the transmission dynamics of drug-resistant tuberculosis. This includes measurement of within-household transmission of various tuberculosis strains, assessment of the impact of socio-demographic and clinical confounders and risk modifiers, and measurement of associations between specific resistance mutations and phenotypes. Dr. Becerra also teaches in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine course for first-year HMS students and supervises students and interns in the field.
