Leadership Development Programs
There is a tremendous need in the Boston area for HIV and substance abuse prevention programs. PACT believes that key to any successful program are peer leaders who can communicate effectively with at-risk populations, access people at high risk and bring knowledge of HIV and substance abuse to their communities.
In November 2000, two Latino men in early recovery from substance abuse approached PACT with a novel prevention idea. Long-time activists Ricardo Osorio and Cesar Angomas had identified the need for a culturally tailored and community-based recovery program to promote the reintegration of former addicts into society.
PACT worked with these men to develop and fund the Fuerza Latina Leadership Program, a recovery, leadership development and community organizing program that focuses on HIV and substance abuse prevention for Latino men.
Fuerza Latina is dedicated to building participants’ self-reliance and focusing on the impact of substance abuse on lives, families, and communities. Selected participants are trained as community prevention leaders and organizers. Core program activities include identifying community needs, learning public speaking skills, and developing educational presentations. Leaders conduct outreach at local treatment programs, emphasizing their own experiences in recovery, relapse prevention, and STD prevention.
