Marcella Alsan, MD, MPH seeks to study the relationship between health, wealth and welfare, an interest that first developed when she was a medical student providing care to poor populations in Swaziland and Ecuador. Her experiences working domestically have complemented her efforts abroad: as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, she helped to provide healthcare to the uninsured, and as a volunteer she has worked on research projects for Partners In Health and on monitoring patient adherence for PACT. As a Global Health Equity Resident, Dr. Alsan hopes to investigate whether access to health care affects not only health attainment, but also broader socioeconomic outcomes such as education and employment. In addition to being a Global Health Equity resident, she is currently a PhD candidate at Harvard Business School.
Dr. Alsan earned her AB in biology and psychology from Harvard College in 1999 and, in 2005, her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health and her MD from the Loyola University School of Medicine. Dr. Alsan has conducted research with Drs. David Bloom and David Canning, professors of international health and economics at the Harvard School of Public Health. Through their studies, they determined that foreign direct investment is strongly and positively influenced by population health in low-and-middle income countries. Their findings will be published in World Development in September of 2006.
