Rebecca Newlin Hutchinson, MD’s experiences working both domestically and abroad sparked her interest in learning to improve the healthcare of vulnerable populations. While working with the Indian Health Service in Gallup, New Mexico, she was first exposed to the extreme poverty of communities here in the United States. For Dr. Hutchinson, this experience highlighted the importance of providing healthcare that is both accessible and relevant to the population it serves. Later, while working at the Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana, she observed the ways in which comprehensive healthcare may be provided despite a lack of resources. By enrolling in the Global Health Equity Residency, Dr. Hutchinson hopes to gain the skills necessary to provide community-based treatment of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and chronic respiratory problems to marginalized patients here in the United States.
Dr. Hutchinson earned her BA in Chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1999 and her MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2006. Her research experience includes a study of interventions used to improve rates of colorectal cancer screening for patients with low health literacy skills and a cross-sectional survey to determine the relationship between mortality, neighborhood segregation and social capital in Philadelphia, PA. |
