Neo Tapela, MD was born and raised in Botswana, where she was frequently witness to the adverse consequences of limited healthcare resources. Inspired to become a physician, she came to the United States on an academic scholarship in 1997. During her medical training, she spent time working at McCord Hospital in South Africa and Princess Marina Hospital in Botswana, where she was struck by the universality of chronic disease and sobered by the economic realities that dictate the appropriation of limited resources. From her training in the Global Health Equity Residency, Dr. Tapela seeks to develop skills for clinical practice, healthcare policy, advocacy and leadership in resource-poor settings. Upon completing her training, she plans to return to Botswana as a skilled internist and public policy practitioner focusing predominantly on HIV/AIDS medicine.
Dr. Tapela earned her BA in Biological and Africana Studies from Wellesley College and her MD from Harvard Medical School. Her research experience includes a study of the impact and progress of Botswana’s national antiretroviral therapy program and assisting with diagnostic tests as part of Botswana’s national surveillance Sentinel studies and the Botswana-Harvard Prevention of Mother-to-Child-Transmission studies. |
