Kwonjune (KJ) Justin Seung, MD, has been the MDR-TB Program Officer for the Partners In Health (PIH) Lesotho Project since mid-2007 and is an Associate Physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in the Division of Global Health Equity.
Dr. Seung's work in Lesotho - an impoverished country completely surrounded by South Africa - focuses on the treatment, research, and delivery of care for MDR-TB (multi-drug-resistant TB) patients living in resource-poor settings. Dr. Seung also has expertise in treating MDR-TB/HIV co-infection, as 70% of the MDR-TB patients in Lesotho are HIV-positive. He also works with the Lesotho Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to conduct trainings for doctors, nurses, and health workers from all parts of southern Africa to more effectively identify and treat MDR-TB and HIV co-infected patients.
From 2001 - 2004, Dr. Seung was a member of the Partners In Health clinical team in Peru, in which he assisted the Ministry of Health with scale-up of treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis nationally. In 2004, Dr. Seung moved to the World Health Organization and worked in the Department of HIV/AIDS until 2006. During that time, he traveled extensively through Africa, Latin America and Asia and helped various Ministries of Health expand HIV care and treatment programs.
Dr. Seung graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1998 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 2001.
