Please register for fourth year elective courses with the Harvard Medical School Registrar. Application information and course descriptions for our fourth year externships can be found here.

Please note that you are more likely to be placed in a general surgery course if you apply for three or four courses per month.

Course Listing

I. General Surgery

Brigham and Women's Hospital's Department of Surgery offers four General Surgery courses, one for each General Surgery Service. Each elective is specific to one or more of the General Surgery Service.

The courses are as follows:

• General Surgery/Gastrointestinal Surgery (SU501M.23).  Students rotate on Cushing service or the Chief's service. Students meet with the preceptor (Dr. David Soybel or one of the staff) once each week in clinic. In addition, students participate in the activities of each team under the supervision of the Chief Residents. Course Director: David I. Soybel, M.D.

• Gastrointestinal Surgery (SU506M.23).  Students will rotate with the Cutler Service team.  Course Director: Stanley W. Ashley, M.D.

• Surgical Oncology (SU511M.23).  Students will rotate with the Moore Service team.  Course Director: Richard Swanson, M.D.

• Vascular Surgery (SU519M.23).  Students will rotate with the Mannick Service team.  Course Director: TBA

II. Specialties

Department of Surgery offers the following courses in specialty services:

• Clinical and Experimental Cardiac Surgery (SU504M.23).  Course Director: James Rawn, M.D.

Advanced Clinical Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (OT501M.5).  Course Director: Charles Norris, M.D.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SU514M. JA).  Course Director: Elof Eriksson, M.D., Ph.D.

• Surgical Critical Care Trauma and Burn Management (SU535M.23).  Course Director: Selwyn O. Rogers, Jr., M.D., M.P.H.

• General Thoracic Surgery (SU526M.23).  Course Directors: David Sugarbaker, M.D., Yolanda Colson, M.D., Ph.D., & Michael Jaklitsch, M.D.

• Urologic Oncology (SU518M.23).  Course Director: Jerome Richie, M.D.
