| Research SummaryExplore phrenic nerve pacing at outside institutions and bring technology to Brigham community for clinical patient care. Back to the top | Equipment & TechniquesA diaphragmatic pacing system is an implantable nerve stimulator that supports patients in need of chronic ventilation whose phrenic nerves, diaphragm and lungs have residual function. The pacing unit consists of electrodes sutured to the phrenic nerves, implantable radio receivers and an external transmitter assembly that powers the system. The transmitter generates a cycle of signals that activate diaphragmatic contraction, which initiates breathing.
