Patients undergoing a Roux-En-Y gastric bypass are routinely discharged on the second or third day after surgery. Those who receive the laparoscopic adjustable band (Lap Band) are routinely discharged the day following surgery. The vast majority of patients stay in the hospital for 5 days or less.
During the hospital stay, the diet is advanced to include low sugar liquid protein drinks. At the time of discharge, patients are generally able to walk, care for themselves, eat and drink.
