Yang (Ted) D. Teng, Ph.D., M.S., M.D., Principal Investigator
Dr. Teng directs two basic science laboratories that are affiliated with the Departments of Neurosurgery and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School/Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Boston Children’s Hospital/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, respectively. He is the current President of the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair.
Dr. Teng is associate professor of surgery and physical medicine & rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School. In addition to his initial medical training, he obtained his M.S. in neuropharmacology from Beijing University Health Science Center, PRC and earned his Ph.D. in Cell Biology/Neuroscience from Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA. He completed his post-doctoral training at Georgetown University and Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, respectively. Dr. Teng studies recovery neurobiology and functional multipotency of stem cells through understanding intra-spinal cord neural circuitry reorganization and molecular mechanisms that underlie stem cell-based multimodal strategy to treat spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neural degenerative diseases. His primary research interests also include post neurotrauma secondary mechanisms that trigger further loss of neurons and axons in the spinal cord, SCI-related respiratory, gastrointestinal and sensory abnormalities (i.e., autonomic disorders and neuropathic pain), and cellular/molecular events responsible for muscular atrophy and bone degeneration resulting from spinal cord trauma. The ultimate goal of the SCI and Stem Cell Biology Research Laboratories is to translate the most tangible basic neuroscience discoveries into clinical therapies to improve function and impede major complications following SCI and other neurological disorders.
