The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Heart & Vascular Center provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for men and women with heart disease. From world-class cardiologists skilled in the latest, most effective treatments to immediate access to a robust team of physician specialists to compassionate nursing and convenient appointment scheduling, we meet every patient and family need inside the region’s most integrated and technologically-equipped cardiovascular center.
Our board certified cardiologists provide advanced heart care for all conditions— common to complex—including coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, congenital heart disease and heart valve disease. Utilizing our trademark team approach, BWH cardiologists champion heart health through our Preventive Cardiology program. Physicians across the globe refer their most complicated patients to our specialists in interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, cardio-oncology, cardiovascular genetics and more.
One of the largest cardiovascular centers in the United States, the Heart & Vascular Center—nationally ranked in the specialty of cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report — treats over 50,000 outpatients and 7,000 inpatients and performs more than 8,000 procedures annually at the state-of-the-art Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
All inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services are available at BWH’s Shapiro Cardiovascular Center in Boston, and outpatient cardiovascular services are also available at four other convenient BWH locations: Gretchen S. and Edward A. Fish Center for Women's Health in Chestnut Hill, Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center in Foxborough, and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and Brookside Community Health Center in Jamaica Plain. Brigham and Women’s Hospital also has affiliations with Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island; Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine; and Harbor Medical Associates, where patients can be seen by BWH providers.
From concept to care, our cardiology specialists forge ahead with revolutionary ideas: fostering them in BWH research laboratories, shepherding them through years of clinical trials and ushering these new treatments, medications and technologies into clinical practice worldwide.
The discoveries of BWH cardiologists—past and present—have been life-changing for people with heart disease:
In October 2016 it was announced that an international team led by Calum MacRae, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has been selected to receive the One Brave Idea Research Award, a five-year, $75 million award from the American Heart Association, Verily Life Sciences and AstraZeneca to research genetic and molecular markers of heart disease. This is in addition to the over 150 clinical trials our cardiologists currently have in the research-to-patient-care pipeline, promising a brighter, heart-healthy future for millions.
