Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is where American neurosurgery was founded by Dr. Harvey Cushing in 1913. Since our opening over 100 years ago, the department has maintained a strong commitment to state-of-the-art patient care and to the advancement of neurosurgical research and education. Today, BWH is one of the top neurosurgery providers in the country and has been consistently ranked as one of America’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report®. Our team consists of 23 nationally-acclaimed surgeons, 15 residents from Harvard Medical School and over 100 department staff members. This multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing patient-focused, world-class medical care for the entire spectrum of neurological diseases.

The health and safety of our patients, families and staff remain our top priority as we as we emerge from the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Neurosurgery team is devoted to providing the best care to all our patients. Regardless of where you are in your care journey, we are here for you in person and virtually.

We understand that you may have concerns, and want to assure you that we are steadfast in our commitment to safely providing the critical care you need and help you achieve the best possible outcome.

“Our internal Brigham data and best evidence shows that the measures, instituted since March, are providing the safest possible environment while you are in the hospital and that we have never stopped taking care for patients suffering from urgent and emergent conditions.”
E. Antonio Chiocca, MD, PhD
