Pulmonary Vascular Disease (PVD) Research

Through our fellowships in Pulmonary Critical Care and Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital we offer advanced training in pulmonary vascular disease. We provide in-depth experience and access to exceptional clinical, and research opportunities of the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Advanced training is for physicians in pulmonary critical care medicine, and either pediatric or adult cardiology who wish to acquire additional expertise in the area of pulmonary vascular disease.

We tailor the clinical training to the needs of the fellow. This would include rotations on the pulmonary vascular consult and inpatient services, the pulmonary vascular clinics, the cardiac catheterization laboratory, and the cardiopulmonary exercise physiology laboratory. It is designed to prepare trainees for academic careers in a subspecialty with a focus on pulmonary vascular disease.

Opportunities for bench, clinical, and translational research are abundant. The research component of the fellowship largely depends on the trainee’s interests and level of experience. Each fellow will receive close mentorship and oversight by a faculty research committee.

Our research programs provide many opportunities to pursue advanced study in endothelial and smooth muscle cell biology, molecular and inflammatory pathways involved in pulmonary vascular remodeling, thromboembolic disease, experimental models of pulmonary vascular disease, clinical investigation of pulmonary vascular disease, and genetic and population studies of pulmonary vascular diseases. Research opportunities, however, are not limited to this list. Individuals with advanced research training are particularly encouraged to pursue their own work in addressing questions relevant to pulmonary vascular disease. Please visit our PCCM fellowship web page for details of our program.
