The Women’s Sports Medicine service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a busy and renowned sports medicine practice led by Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin. We offer medical students who are interested in orthopedics and women’s sports medicine an opportunity to spend their summer participating in clinical research and job shadowing in orthopedics. The goals of the internship are to provide summer interns with clinical research experience and diverse shadowing opportunities in a clinical environment. Our clinical research focuses on sports-related injuries, treatments, surgical and non-surgical outcomes, and sex differences in musculoskeletal medicine.
As part of the summer internship, you will conduct literature searches, interact with research subjects, prepare manuscripts, and collect and/or analyze data. You will work primarily with Dr. Matzkin and the members of her research team, including residents and physician assistants as well as colleagues in other orthopedic surgery specialties. An important part of the summer internship is shadowing opportunities in order for you to gain experience working in a sports medicine clinic and caring for patients with sports-related injuries. You will be encouraged to shadow our physicians in all aspects of patient care such as the clinic and the operating room. You are welcome to attend any team conferences and presentations. We also encourage and set up opportunities based on interest to shadow subspecialties outside of women’s sports medicine, such as trauma, hand, upper extremity, foot and ankle, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
We are seeking candidates who are current medical students that demonstrate an interest in the field of orthopedic surgery. Candidates should have prior experience and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Past experience in clinical research is helpful but not required. We value candidates who are hard-working with strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a team environment.
This internship is unpaid and offered only to medical students. We ask you to make a commitment of 6-8 weeks. We hope that candidates will take full advantage of the many opportunities provided in this internship.
