Stereotactic Needle Biopsy

The BWH Lee Bell Center for Breast Imaging provides stereotactic needle biopsy at the hospital main campus. A stereotactic needle biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure which collects small tissue fragments for laboratory analysis.

Our technologists and radiologists use state-of-the-art breast imaging equipment to produce high-quality images while focusing on patient safety and comfort.

If you have questions regarding pre-authorization requirements, please call your referring physicians’ office or the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. If pre-authorization is required, that process will be initiated by the referring physician who ordered your mammogram.

If you do not have insurance, the BWH Financial Counseling Office can assist you with the MassHealth/Medicaid application process. They can be reached at (617) 732-7005 or toll-free at (866) 736-1510.

Getting Copies of Your Images

If your imaging exam was performed at BWH or one of our community-based locations, your images and reports are saved to your electronic medical record within four hours after completion of your exam. You can get a copy of your images on a CD at the BWH Image Service Center or any of our community-based locations. You will need to complete a release form, which you can bring with you or fax prior to pick-up. You will also need to provide positive identification to receive your images.

Getting Copies of Your Radiology Reports or Medical Record

To receive copies of your medical record, you must submit a written, signed, and dated request form to Health Information Services. The form is available in English or in Spanish.
