Welcome to the Department of Urology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Since the opening of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1913, our Urologic Surgeons have consistently delivered state-of-the-art care to patients not only in Boston, but around the world. I was honored to be appointed as Chief in 2011 and then Chair of the newly formed Department in 2023. I’m following in the footsteps of leaders in the field of Urology - Dr. Jerome P. Richie (1987-2011), Dr. Ruben F. Gittes (1975-1987), Dr. J. Hartwell Harrison (1941-1975), and Dr. William C. Quinby (1916-1941). I take pride in our storied history and look forward to our promising future as we strive to educate the next generation of leaders, push the boundaries of discovery and deliver innovative compassionate care to all of our patients at all times.
The Department of Urology continues to grow and expand its network to provide the highest quality clinical care for our patients and their families. All of our outstanding surgeons and physicians are faculty of the Harvard Medical School. With nationally and internationally prominent surgeons specializing in all facets of urologic care, including kidney, bladder and prostate tumors, incontinence, voiding dysfunction and impotence, we can provide clinical expertise in every urologic disorder. Importantly, our medical and radiation oncology partners at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute allow us to provide integrated, multidisciplinary cancer care. Our patients can be seen not only at the nationally recognized Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the Longwood Medical Area, but also our satellite offices at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain and Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center (20 Patriot Place, Foxborough). By opening offices in the community we strive to bring world class care to all of our patients.
Research is a focus within our department. We have been at the forefront of science since 1913, from the first renal transplant to minimally invasive surgery. A core mission is to conduct novel research which will advance science and improve care of patients not only here in Boston but throughout the world. We partner with researchers throughout the world to engage in collaborative translational research and to bring basic science discoveries into the clinic. Our Health Services Research, in collaboration with the Center for Surgery and Public Health, is considered a national leader in the field.
As the final core mission of our department, we are dedicated to educating the next generation of urologists primarily through our fellowship and residency programs. Our residents come from the finest medical schools in the country and we are fortunate to have the privilege of teaching them our craft. Our Urologic Oncology Fellowship with our partners at MGH refines and optimizes the skill set of urologists interested in treating complex cancer. Once they graduate, these bright students, residents, and fellows provide the best urologic care wherever they ultimately choose to practice. Many go on to academic positions where they in turn innovate and educate. They are our proud legacies.
Since arriving in 2011, my goal has been to foster an atmosphere of teamwork in clinical care, research and education. Improving people’s lives though outstanding, compassionate care is the ultimate goal not only in our department, but also at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. I hope that patients, family members, students and visiting physicians will take notice of our commitment to excellence. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if there is anything we can do to improve your care.
Sincerely,
Adam S. Kibel, MD
