Shadick Receives Award of Recognition for Lyme Disease Prevention

Nancy Shadick, MD, MPH

Nancy Shadick, MD, MPH, director of the Lyme Disease Prevention Center in the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, was recently honored with an Award of Recognition in the area of Lyme disease prevention and education at MIT’s Lyme Innovation Hackathon.

Dr. Shadick’s research interests include rheumatoid arthritis and epidemiology. She is the principal investigator in developing a school-based intervention to reduce Lyme disease. The focus of this program, “Feel, Find, Free,” delivers an educational program in schools to promote personal protective practices, encourage early disease detection and modify residential habitats to reduce tick density. The program’s results were reported in a randomized controlled trial in this month’s Journal of Vector Borne and Zoonotic Disease. The program was effective in improving the knowledge and practice of tick-bite precautionary behavior among elementary school children.

The Lyme Innovation Hackathon, sponsored by MIT Hacking Medicine, was a three-day working conference at which individuals worked in teams to solve vexing problems related to Lyme disease.
