Maru and Schwarz Awarded Grants from USAID, Skoll

Duncan Maru, MD, PhD Ryan Schwarz, MD, MBA

Duncan Maru, MD, PhD, and Ryan Schwarz, MD, MBA, both of the Division of Global Health Equity, are part of a team in Nepal that was recently awarded two grants to study innovations in health care delivery systems.

USAID's Partnerships for Enhanced Engagements in Research (PEER) grant will assess an approach to continually surveying populations for pregnancies and childhood illnesses through community health care workers. The PEER mechanism pairs investigators from low- and middle-income countries with U.S. government-funded investigators.

Through the Skoll Global Threats Foundation grant, the team will study the potential of an integrated electronic medical record that tracks patients, symptoms and diagnostics for applications in disease surveillance and outbreak detection.

Maru and Schwarz have been recognized in the past for their work with Possible, a non-profit organization working in partnership with the Nepali Ministry of Health to deliver high-quality, low-cost health care and health system strengthening in rural regions.
