Kim Earns NIH/NIAMS R01 Award

Seoyoung Kim, MD,
ScD, MSCE

Seoyoung Kim, MD, ScD, MSCE, of the divisions of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics and of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, has received a four-year, $2 million National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIH/NIAMS) R01 award for her proposal, "Use and Safety of Opioids in Patients Undergoing Total Joint Replacement."

The main aim of the proposal is to identify predictors of persistent opioid use and opioid dose escalation in patients after total joint replacement for hip or knee osteoarthritis. It will also evaluate the effects of opioid use patterns on short- and long-term clinical outcomes and safety following total joint replacement.

Kim's research focuses on comparative safety and effectiveness of medications for the rheumatic diseases, as well as health services and outcome research in rheumatology. She previously received an NIAMS K23 career development award that supported work evaluating the risk of human papillomavirus infection and cervical dysplasia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and adherence to current cancer screening guidelines. She has also received an NIAMS R21 award to study the effects of treatment of gout/hyperuricemia on the risk of myocardial infarction and diabetes.

The mission of the NIAMS is to support research into the causes, treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.
