Redline Earns Dement Academic Achievement Award

Susan Redline, MD, MPH

Susan Redline, MD, MPH, senior physician and director of the Program in Sleep Medicine Epidemiology, has been awarded the 2017 William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award. She will receive this award at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine SLEEP meeting in June. As part of the award, Redline and her research was also featured in the cover story of the May issue of Sleep Review.

Redline conducts epidemiological research to understand the risks associated with untreated sleep apnea and the contribution of genetic risk factors to this disorder. She also conducts clinical trials to evaluate the role of sleep interventions on health. She leads a Sleep Reading Center for multicenter studies, and developed web-based resources and tools that enable the exchange and analysis of sleep research data among biomedical researchers worldwide, as well as resources to support patient-researcher team science.

Established in 1994, the William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award recognizes members of the sleep field who have displayed exceptional initiative and progress in the areas of sleep education and academic research.

The award's namesake, William C. Dement, MD, PhD, is one of the nation's leading sleep researchers. His extensive publication of research, studies of REM sleep and development of the Multiple Sleep Latency Test greatly advanced the sleep medicine field. The award embodies the pursuit of knowledge, a commitment to teaching and an unceasing quest to disseminate truth.
