BWH was awarded a grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative DAF, a donor-advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation, to support the philanthropic organization's Human Cell Atlas (HCA) projects, part of an international effort that aims to create a shared, open-reference atlas of all cells in the healthy human body as a resource for studies of health and disease. This award supports work by Vincent Carey, PhD, of the Channing Division of Network Medicine.
Carey's research, “Statistical analysis and comprehension of the human cell atlas in R / Bioconductor: access and scalable infrastructure,” is one of 85 projects worldwide contributing to the HCA. His work aims to ensure that the HCA can be accessed, analyzed and understood using modern computational and statistical approaches by a wide audience of researchers. In addition, his work focuses on creating shareable terminology for cells and what they do, and will help investigators build and work with the HCA using a common language.
Carey, a biostatistician, designs and analyzes clinical trials in the fields of obesity, cardiovascular disease and asthma. In addition, he is a co-founder of bioconductor.org, an open-source software ecosystem for the statistical analysis of genome-scale experiments.
