Peter Libby, MD, of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, received the Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) for his outstanding work in cardiovascular medicine. This award recognizes individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from coronary artery disease – the leading cause of death worldwide.

This award is named after Arthur Agatston, MD, FSCCT, a visionary and pioneer in the field of noninvasive cardiac imaging and a leading preventive cardiologist. His scientific work, first reported in 1991 with Warren Janowitz, MD, JD, resulted in the Agatston Score, a method for screening patients for coronary artery disease by measuring the amount of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries. Agatston also devised the popular South Beach Diet to encourage healthy eating as part of cardiovascular prevention.

Libby’s clinical and research interests focus on inflammation in atherosclerosis and vascular biology. His current studies have examined arteriosclerosis by examining the various messengers produced by the body that may cause arterial plaque development, disruption and blockages. He has contributed to the translation of over three decades of research on inflammation in vascular disease to clinical practice by helping organize and lead large scale clinical trials that have shown the benefits of targeting this process.

Founded in 2005, SCCT is a community of physicians, scientists and technologists advocating for research, education and clinical excellence in the use of cardiovascular computed tomography.
