Bieber Honored with Election to Forensic Science Standards Board and Royal Appointment to Order of St. John

Frederick Bieber, PhD

Frederick R. Bieber, PhD, of the Department of Pathology, was elected to serve a three-year term on the Forensic Science Standards Board (FSSB) within the Organization of Scientific Areas Committees (OSAC) of the National Institute of Standards, and he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II to the Venerable Order of St. John in recognition of his humanitarian work in human identification using DNA.

The FSSB serves as the governing board of the OSAC and supports the organization by overseeing all operations of committees and subcommittees. The Order of St. John, a British royal order of chivalry, recognizes individuals who have engaged in humanitarian and charitable efforts with populations requiring medical assistance. As a medical geneticist, Dr. Bieber has worked domestically and internationally in forensic genetics and has assisted in many family reunification efforts using DNA, including working to identify victims of the 9/11 attacks and of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
