Philip Elected ASA First Vice President, Receives SUNY Upstate Medical University Distinguished Alumna Award

Beverly Philip, MD, of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, was elected as the new first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) for 2018-2019. The first vice president serves as the head of the Division of Administrative Affairs for ASA. Following this term, Philip will serve as ASA’s president beginning in 2020.

The ASA is the national education, research and scientific association of the specialty, with over 52,000 members joined to raise the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve patient care.

Philip also was honored with State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University’s Distinguished Alumna Award this fall. This award recognizes the extraordinary achievements and outstanding service of alumni for academic achievement, research initiatives, service to their community and distinguished teaching. As Distinguished Alumna, Philip delivered a brief address at the medical school's annual Reunion Awards and Scholarship Presentation in September, encouraging current students to strive for their personal successes.

Philip is the founding director of the Day Surgery Unit at the Brigham. Her clinical interests include the pharmacology of inhaled and intravenous agents, as well as specialized administrative approaches to ambulatory surgery.
