Jagadeesan, Bueno Receive NIBIB Grant

Jayender Jagadeesan, PhD Raphael Bueno, MD

Jayender Jagadeesan, PhD, of the Department of Radiology, and Raphael Bueno, MD, chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, were awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) for their project, “Lung Navigation System for Localizing and Resecting Nodules.”

With the advent of low-dose, CT-based screening that has demonstrated the benefit of early detection of lung cancers, the number of patients diagnosed with sub-centimeter nodules is expected to increase. Jagadeesan and Bueno’s project focuses on developing a novel image-guided navigation system with integrated machine learning and stereo-vision algorithms to localize and excise small and early malignant lung nodules.

NIBIB is one of 27 institutes and centers that are part of NIH, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
