Morteza Mahmoudi, PhD, of the Center for Nanomedicine and the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, was awarded the Brigham Research Institute’s (BRI) 2018 BRIght Futures Prize for his project, “Time to Heal Chronic Wounds.”

Each year, the BRIght Futures Prize competition features three compelling projects with the potential to solve vexing medical problems. The finalists, all Brigham researchers and clinicians, are selected through a rigorous, two-step scientific review session. The winner is determined by public voting, which reached an all-time high this year with 16,530 votes cast in the competition. As the winner, Mahmoudi will receive $100,000 to support his project.

A biomedical investigator at the Brigham, Mahmoudi has been working to develop a skin patch to heal chronic wounds that the body is unable to repair on its own, such as bedsores and diabetic wounds. His patch is made from multifunctional nanofibers, whose unique properties can safely resume bodies' paused healing process. The prize money will help advance his project to clinical trials so that it can be tested in humans.
