Artzi, Lehoczky and Lu Receive 2018 Stepping Strong Innovator Awards

The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at the Brigham announced the winners of the 2018 Stepping Strong Innovator Awards. Each award winner receives $100,000 to pursue groundbreaking research projects with a goal of transforming outcomes for trauma patients.

This year’s recipients from the Brigham are:

  • Natalie Artzi, PhD, of the Division of Engineering in Medicine: “Healing Bone Infections Using Antibiotics and Localized Gene Therapy”
  • Jessica Lehoczky, PhD, of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (in collaboration with Jenna Galloway, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital): “Identifying Pro-Regenerative Drugs for Orthopaedic Trauma”
  • Yi Lu, MD, PhD, of the Department of Neurosurgery (in collaboration with Zhigang He, PhD, of Boston Children's Hospital): “Locomotion Recovery After Spinal Cord Injury Using KCC2 Activation of Interneurons and Axon Regeneration”

The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation aims to transform trauma care for civilians and military heroes who suffer from devastating traumatic injuries. Reny, a 2013 Boston Marathon bombing survivor, received lifesaving care at the Brigham after the bombings and established the center with her family to fuel research and clinical programs to advance trauma healing.
