Singhal Receives Department of Defense and U.S. Army's Exploration — Hypothesis Development Award

Tarun Singhal, MD

Tarun Singhal, MD, of the Department of Neurology, earned the Exploration — Hypothesis Development Award from the Department of Defense and U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs for his project, “The Role of Microglial Activation and Norepinephrine Transporter Abnormalities in Pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis-Related Fatigue.”

The award supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain and potentially groundbreaking concepts in multiple sclerosis research.

As part of his work, Singhal employs cutting-edge positron emission tomography (PET) imaging techniques, high-resolution 7 Tesla MRI scanning and serum biomarker approaches to understand the neurochemical, neuroimmunological and neuropathological basis of fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

Singhal is an associate neurologist at the Partners MS Center and director of PET Imaging Program in Neurologic Diseases at the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases at the Brigham.

The CDMRP originated in 1992 via a Congressional appropriation to foster novel approaches to biomedical research in response to the expressed needs of its stakeholders, the American public, the military and Congress.
