Ramsey Awarded ACS, NCI Research Grants for Skin Cancer Studies

Matthew Ramsey, PhD

Matthew Ramsey, PhD, of the Department of Dermatology, was selected for a 2019 Research Scholar Grant by the American Cancer Society (ACS) in support of his work on Basonuclin 1 in Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). He received a four-year grant totaling $792,000.

This study aims to understand the different roles of Basonuclin 1 in early-stage SCC compared to metastatic SCC, with the goal of identifying metastasis-specific functions that can serve as potential drug targets.

The ACS is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization. Its mission is to free the world from cancer by funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients and spreading the word about prevention.

Ramsey also received a two-year, $403,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This grant will support his pursuit of the identification new drug targets that will cooperate with, and overcome resistance to FGFR inhibitors.

While single-agent therapies such as FGFR inhibitors can be effective for a short time, most patients ultimately develop tumors that no longer respond to treatment. Ramsey’s research aims to identify new drug targets that will specifically cooperate with FGFR inhibitors to block the development of resistant tumors and improve patient survival.

The NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health, which is one of 11 agencies that comprise the Department of Health and Human Services. Established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, the NCI is the federal government's principal agency for cancer research and training.
