Samuels Honored by Williams College, Johns Hopkins and University of Cincinnati

Martin A. Samuels, MD, FAAN, MACP, FRCP, DSci (hon.)

Martin A. Samuels, MD, FAAN, MACP, FRCP, DSci (hon.), founding chair emeritus of the Department of Neurology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Miriam Sydney Joseph Distinguished Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, was honored with a Bicentennial Medal for Distinguished Achievement from Williams College, the National Clinical Excellence Award from Johns Hopkins University and the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Williams College, a private liberal arts college in Williamstown, Mass., honors the members of the community for distinguished achievement in any field of endeavor with this award. Samuels, who completed his undergraduate studies at Williams, was recognized during the college’s Fall Convocation event in September and delivered the ceremony’s convocation address.

Johns Hopkins University’s  Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution established the National Clinical Excellence Award to honor and promote excellence in patient care. Samuels is its inaugural recipient.  One recipient was chosen from all physicians in the country.

Lastly, the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association annually honors a select few alumni with the Outstanding Alumnus Award based on their career accomplishments and contributions to the University and community. One alumnus is selected per college for this award.  Samuels, who earned his medical degree there, was named the College of Medicine’s honoree.

Throughout his career, Samuels has worked to define the field of neurological medicine with its many subspecialties — including neuro-cardiology, neuro-hematology, neuro-gastroenterology — and all the other broad interfaces between diseases of the nervous system and disordered in the rest of the body.
