Jiang, Patel Receive American Society of Nephrology KidneyCure 2020 Grants

Liwei Jiang, PhD, a research fellow in the Division of Renal Medicine, and Ankit Patel, MD, PhD, a clinical fellow in the Division of Renal Medicine, were awarded KidneyCure 2020 grants from the American Society of Nephrology to support high-impact projects that aim to advance kidney health.

Jiang received the John Merrill Grant in Transplantation for her project, “Microengineering Third-Party Off-Shelf-Biological Skin Construct for Burn Patient,” which seeks to develop a novel biomaterial that can reduce the likelihood of a burn patient’s immune system will reject donor tissue in skin transplantation.

Patel was selected for the Joseph A. Carlucci Research Fellow Award for his project, “Derivation of Collecting Duct Principal Cells from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells by Direct Programming via Transcription Factor Expression,” which ultimately seeks to develop a tool to test and evaluate new therapies for polycystic kidney disease and hypertension.
