Matthew Gartland, MD Deirdre Tobias, ScD

Matthew Gartland, MD, of the Division of Global Health Equity and the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care, and Deirdre Tobias, ScD, of the Division of Preventive Medicine, received the Dean’s Community Service Award from Harvard Medical School’s (HMS) Office for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Partnership in honor of their service to organizations supporting our global and local communities.

The Dean’s Community Service Award was established in 1999 to recognize individuals whose dedication and commitment to community service have made a positive impact locally, nationally or internationally.

Gartland, a hospitalist, was honored for his work as founding director of the MGH Asylum Clinic, where more than 100 volunteer clinicians perform forensic medical and psychological evaluations of survivors of persecution and torture seeking asylum in the United States.

Tobias, an associate epidemiologist, was celebrated for her work with Norwell Farms, an organic farm and nonprofit organization that promotes the benefits of local agriculture through educational workshops, summer programs, community events and volunteer opportunities. Tobias serves as co-chair of Norwell Farms’ Board of Directors.
