Westin Named Second Incumbent of Greenes Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Informatics

Carl-Fredik Westin, PhD

Carl-Fredrik Westin, PhD, of the Department of Radiology, was named the second incumbent of the department's
Greenes Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Informatics in recognition of his tremendous contributions to the field of biomedical informatics.

This distinction is named in honor of Robert Greenes, MD, PhD, a pioneer in biomedical informatics who established the Decision Systems Group laboratory at the Brigham. Westin is internationally known for his innovative studies in the field of microstructure imaging and has published over 300 scientific publications throughout his career. He is the director of the Neuroimaging Analysis Center — a Biomedical Technology Resource Center funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering — and principal investigator of the Microstructure Imaging Core. He is also the founding director of the Laboratory of Mathematics in Imaging, which explores application of mathematical theory, analysis, modeling and signal processing to medical imaging applications.

Westin’s research focuses on the development of novel methods for analysis of imaging data. Since joining the Brigham in 1996, he has led and been involved in multiple imaging studies, including those examining structural, functional and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). Today, his lab seeks to develop the next generation dMRI, which has the potential to vastly improve tissue characterization.
