Centers of Expertise for Residents and Fellows Honored for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring

The Centers of Expertise for Residents and Fellows, a joint program of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, won the 2020 Program Award for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring in recognition of its outstanding work to mentor the next generation of health care professionals.

Given by Harvard Medical School’s (HMS) Office for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Partnership, this award recognizes departments, divisions, offices and programs that foster innovation and sustainability in mentoring while building a culture of mentoring.

Established in 2008, the Centers of Expertise for Residents and Fellows comprise four virtual centers that offer enrichment opportunities for medical trainees in the areas of global and community health, quality and safety, health policy and management, and medical education. Trainees engage with faculty outside of their specialties and at different HMS-affiliated institutions.

The program was created and is overseen by Debra Weinstein, MD, vice president for Graduate Medical Education at Mass General Brigham (MGB). Gregg Meyer, MD, MSc, president of the Community Division and executive vice president of Value-Based Care at MGB, has been a champion and lynchpin of the effort, serving as inaugural co-leader of the Centers of Expertise in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety and now as co-leader of Health Policy and Management. The program's current Brigham-based co-leaders are:

  • Lisa Cosimi, MD, Global and Community Health
  • Barbara McNeil, MD, PhD, Health Policy and Management
  • Tracey Milligan, MD, MS, Medical Education
  • Andrew Resnick, MD, MBA, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety
