Hayden Named American Board of Medical Specialties 2020-2021 Visiting Scholar

Robert Hayden, MD

Robert Hayden, MD, of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, was selected for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) 2020–21 Visiting Scholars Program for his research project, "Racial Bias in Educational Simulations of Virtual Patients with COVID-19.”

Visiting Scholars are chosen based on the quality of their proposed research project, the relevance of their research to the ABMS mission and the certification community, and the likelihood of making substantial progress on the project during the scholar year.

Hayden is a resident physician at the Brigham with an interest in the interface between digital innovation and medical education. With support from the ABMS and co-sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, he will study how new online learning tools affect health care providers’ clinical reasoning when caring for patients with COVID-19 and other diagnoses, with a focus on how implicit biases may play a role in the simulated care of virtual patients.

The ABMS is a leading organization for physician board certification that provides expertise, insights and support to elevate the discipline of specialty medicine.
