Foer, Mason Receive Research Awards at 2020 Respiratory Disease Young Investigators Forum

Dinah Foer, MD Stefanie Mason, MD

Dinah Foer, MD, of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and Stefanie Mason, MD, of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, were honored for their research at the National Jewish Health 2020 Respiratory Disease Young Investigators Forum.

Foer earned first place in the forum’s Basic Science Research competition for her project, “The Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Axis in Platelet-Mediated Airway Inflammation.” Mason placed second in Clinical Research for her project, Associations Between Muscle Mass, Exacerbations, and Mortality in Ever-Smokers.

Throughout the virtual forum, participants presented abstracts in basic science research or clinical research to a panel of expert faculty who score presentations based on scientific importance, quality of research, response to questions and overall presentation.

Foer worked with project co-investigator Tao Liu, PhD, of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, to develop a research project studying the effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist drugs, widely used for the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity, in patients with respiratory disease. Foer’s goal is to improve care for patients with asthma and metabolic dysfunction. Project mentors for Foer’s work include Joshua A. Boyce, MD, chief of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Elizabeth W. Karlson, MD, of the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation and Immunity, and David W. Bates, MD, chief of General Internal Medicine.

Mason’s project, with mentorship from George Washko, MD, of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, examined associations between the pectoral muscle area, which is representative of a person’s overall muscle mass, and clinical outcomes, such as respiratory symptoms and mortality, in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
