Joshi Receives NIAMS Grant for Developing Hydrogel Based Therapy for Osteoarthritis

Nitin Joshi, PhD

Nitin Joshi, PhD, of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, was awarded the R01 grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) for his research project, in which he aims to create a hydrogel therapy platform that will prevent the progression of osteoarthritis in active joints.

R01 grants fund health-related research projects that support the mission of the National Institutes of Health. For this project, Joshi is collaborating with Jeffrey Karp, PhD, of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Services, and Joerg Ermann, MD, and Jing Cui, MD, PhD, both of the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation and Immunity. If successful, this novel therapy could ease symptoms for the millions of physically active people living with osteoarthritis.

More broadly in his work at the Brigham, Joshi conducts other highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives aimed at developing new drug-delivery solutions to solving complex medical problems.

NIAMS supports research into the causes, treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.
