Benacerraf Named AJOG Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Beryl Benacerraf, MD

Beryl Benacerraf, MD, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was honored as a 2021 Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) for revolutionizing the prenatal diagnosis of anomalies present at birth and improving the detection of gynecologic disorders with the use of ultrasound.

The Giants in Obstetrics and Gynecology series aims to recognize individuals who have changed the practice of medicine, and to learn about their journeys of discovery, inspirations and challenges.

Benacerraf has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and is an elected fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. She opened the door for what is now known as genetic sonography, a modality that has dramatically improved prenatal diagnosis and the characterization of fetal syndromes.

The aim of the AJOG is to publish original research, reviews, opinions, video clips, podcasts and interviews that will have an impact on the understanding of health and disease and that has the potential to change the practice of women's health care.
