Ganguli Receives AcademyHealth's Research Publication-of-the-Year Award

Ishani Ganguli, MD, MPH

Ishani Ganguli, MD, MPH, of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care, received the Publication-of-the-Year Award from Academy Health for her team’s study, “Physician Work Hours and the Gender Pay Gap — Evidence from Primary Care.”

The Publication-of-the-Year Award recognizes the best and most relevant peer-reviewed, scientific work that the fields of health services research and health policy have produced in the prior calendar year. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine in October 2020, Ganguli’s study challenged the long-held assumption — based on survey data alone — that the gender pay gap is partly due to women working fewer hours.

Ganguli is an internist at Brigham and Women's Advanced Primary Care Associates, South Huntington, and a health services and policy researcher. In her research, Ganguli studies the value of ambulatory care, with a particular focus on primary care payment and delivery, the care of patients with medical and social complexity, and low-value medical tests that can cause a "cascade" of follow-up treatments, leading to poorer health outcomes.

AcademyHealth strives to advance the field of health care by bringing together stakeholders from across the health system. Throughout the year, the organization hosts conferences, provides scholarships and fellowships to researchers, and works with policymakers to apply new research evidence to policy.
