Rexrode, Rich-Edwards Receive $2.8M NHLBI Research Grant

Kathryn Rexrode, MD, MPH Janet Rich-Edwards, ScD, MPH

Kathryn Rexrode, MD, MPH, chief of the Division of Women's Health, and Janet Rich-Edwards, ScD, MPH, also of the Division of Women’s Health, received a $2.83 million R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for their research project, “Using Metabolomics to Understand CVD Risk in Women with a History of Preterm Delivery.”

Through analyzing a wide panel of metabolites among 1,500 women and the team plans to identify metabolite profiles among women with a history of preterm delivery. Rexrode and Rich-Edwards will explore the physiologic connections between preterm delivery and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in order to better predict and prevent CVD in women.

More broadly at the Brigham, Rexrode’s research focuses on metabolic, hormonal and lifestyle risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women, with a particular interest in the health effects of metabolomic profiles, endogenous sex hormones and obesity. Rich-Edwards, who also serves as director of Lifecourse Epidemiology in the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology, focuses her research on determinants of women’s reproductive health across their lifetimes, as well as prenatal and childhood factors that affect the risk of developing chronic disease in adulthood.

The NHLBI provides global leadership for a research, training, and education program to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood disorders and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives.
