Zebardast Wins Research to Prevent Blindness 2021 Career Development Award

Nazlee Zebardast, MD, MSc

Nazlee Zebardast, MD, MSc, of the Division of Ophthalmology, was awarded the 2021 Career Development Award from Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB). This four-year, $300,000 award recognizes promising junior ophthalmology faculty with demonstrated potential for independent research.

With support from this award, Zebardast aims to develop novel imaging, genomics-based screening and diagnostic tools for glaucoma. These tools will be designed to identify patients with glaucoma at high risk for vision loss before they show symptoms and prevent unnecessary care for patients with conditions unlikely to worsen.

Zebardast’s research interests focus on machine-learning methods to characterize and define novel glaucoma endophenotypes to understand genetic causes for this blinding disease. Her clinical work specializes in the treatment of adult glaucoma and cataracts with interest in minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries.

Established more than 60 years ago with the goal of understanding and treating vision loss, RPB is a nonprofit that provides funding for eye research to 37 leading scientific institutions in the U.S.
